New Year's Eve at Home

The clock is ticking down the final hours of 2013.

I was invited a a party by really good friends.  But I just can't seem to rally to show up.  I've been to their parties several times in years past, and it's most definitely my kind of New Year's Eve party-  Pjs and board games.  But although I know and love my two friends that are hosting it, I don't know most of their other party guests, and I just don't feel up to the enthusiastic, "HI!  How are you!  What's been up all year?! Yay!!!"  (Perhaps because Fermin and I did go out last night, and I woke up this morning telling Fermin I am officially OFF THE SAUCE.  Please note:  I've never really been ON THE SAUCE, and because of that, when I do drink, I don't handle it well. But that's it!  I'M OFF THE SAUCE.  FOR GOOD.)

I'm so sorry to Fermin that for nights like these, I can't magically become the charming extrovert that he is.  I can pull it off okay, but it is draining.  I  realize if I could tone it down and be more even keel like he is, it just might not be so draining for me to be social.  But as Popeye so precisely put it, "I yam what I yam."

The great thing is, I was able to tell my friends the honest truth about more than likely not making it to their party tonight and they don't hate me for it.  It feels so good to be understood. And still loved.

So, cheers!  I'm ready for you, 2014.  I'm getting more and more comfortable in my own skin.  Fermin and I, along with the Ricardo's, will be ringing in the new year by watching Dick Clark's (aka Ryan Seacrest's) Rockin' Eve.  I yam what I yam.

Christmas Holiday Wrap

Ahhhhh.  Christmas time.  It's already come and gone.

I can remember, as a kid, I always felt sad when Christmas was over.  There was such a build up to Christmas morning, the whole month of December. Then it was one fast and fun (and a little furious!) day, and by the 26th or 27th, it would occur to me that we had to wait a whole year to get back to that kind of fun again.

Of course, Christmas isn't quite the same, now that I'm a grown up.  But that mindset I had as a child, those "post-holiday blues" each year, lasted long into my adulthood.

Until this year.

I don't feel sad at all.  I'm sort of glad for some of it to be over.  But the good memories will remain...
I went with my family to see White Christmas at Fair Park.  I kept thinking, "Mom would have loved this".
Me and my big (little) sis got to spend a lot of great time together-- I adore her!
Tuba Christmas, at Thanksgiving Square in downtown Dallas- An old tradition for many, a relatively new one for us!
Grandma Dad-  Dad's head got cold so he wore my scarf.  Who knew my Dad could look so much like a grandmother?
MY FAMILY: I don't know WHAT was going on with my face, but clearly, I was fighting for a little face time!  :)
Holiday baking with my two favorite sous chefs, Lucy and Ricky.
I am grateful for these blessing.
Merry Christmas!!

This Weekend's Holiday Craft Fair

Well, I've got my second craft fair under my belt now.  And the final one of the year for sure!

Our booth at the Bishop Lynch Christmas Bazaar looked more or less the same as the one I posted about here, that we had done about a month ago.  We had to flip our tables around and set it up slightly different, which really shouldn't have been as mentally challenging as it was!
The Sparkle Booth at the Bishop Lynch Holiday Bazaar
Resparkable Vintage Jewelry on display!
There were about 50 other vendors, lots of them jewelry,  but no other repurposed-vintage-handcrafters like us!   We were located in a great spot, surrounded by nice, friendly people, and we were inside on a cold and windy day. Yay!  I think we lucked out, and it was a great day.

The pillow Allyson gave me earlier that morning.. because, as you know, I say YAY often!
Except, towards the end of the day, my booth partner, Allyson, was complaining more of more of fatigue and a headache.  I figured it was just allergies, or a long day, or....

...She texted me just a little bit ago telling me she just got home from a clinic and has been officially diagnosed with the flu.  It's her first flu ever.  I consoled her, telling her, she will probably feel like she's going to die, and in fact, sort of want to die, but in about a week, she'll be thankful for her health like never before.

I, of course, consoled myself by using my neti-pot for the first time this season.   I read that the flu is contagious even before symptoms start. Uh oh.  So I'm fighting the good fight.  "YAY"

So if you came to our booth, THANK YOU, and now, go wash your hands.

Music Monday- Nothing From Nothing by Billy Preston

I had to have my car towed from my garage a couple of weeks ago because it wouldn't start.  The Mini place kept it nearly 2 whole weeks, altho the only problem it had was a dead battery.  Obviously, they are just a bit slow.

I missed my car.  And was so happy the day they finally called and told me it was ready to be picked up.  I, of course, headed over to get it immediately.

It felt so good to get in my car and sit in the chair.  I felt like Goldilocks... It felt just right. And the first song that came on the radio was this one...

I hadn't heard this song in years.  Such a great one.  Billy Preston, I love you.  Just had to post it.  Such a nice blast from the past.

Happy Monday!  :)

Sparkly Gift Ideas!

Although these last couple of cold, icy days have kept me indoors and sadly, pretty inactive, I have been somewhat productive.

I've made a few new repurposed vintage jewelry pieces that I think are pretty awesome!  I've listed a several new things in my Resparkable Vintage online store over at Etsy.   I'm in the process of listing more.

Here's a peek at some of the newly listed, and soon to be listed things in the shop.
vintage assemblage necklace- from a vintage pin, bracelet, and necklace
repurposed vintage necklace using vintage CORO clip earring with gold tone, beaded chain
vintage assemblage necklace with gold leaf and white beaded floral pendant and white rosary beads
repurposed vintage necklace with silver/rhinestone leaf on silver tone chain
Although I've made these from my own collection of vintage trinkets, if you have vintage pieces that are special to you, but you don't ever wear them, because maybe they just aren't your style (i.e.: you don't wear brooches, screw back earrings, or shoe clips!) I can turn them into something that you can and will want to wear!  Think about what a special gift to yourself that would be! Just click the email button  to contact me and we can get started right away!

Baby, It's Cold Outside in Dallas!

Although a couple of days ago it was 80 degrees here in Dallas, today we woke up to ice so thick, it actually looks like snow on the ground.

And it's sort of shut every one down.

And since this is such a rare occasion here in North Texas, it's pretty awesome!

My gig tonight got cancelled.  The drive there would have been treacherous so I'm so glad I don't have to make it.  I'm so thankful to stay put, here in this warm home, instead.  I'm suppose to play tomorrow night at The Oar House, but it's sounding like the weather may continue thru the weekend.  And honestly:  YAY.

There's no place like home. Especially when.... Baby, It's Cold Outside! (brought to you by the foxy Joseph Gordon-Levitt)

Cyber Monday Shopping and Selling

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving holiday.

my newly organized spice o' life
Ours was nice and lazy. Fermin had the whole week off from work, and we just hung around the home, getting a few things done.  But I emphasize, a few.  I went to town, cleaning out all the kitchen cabinets and drawers.  I even alphabetized my spice cabinet! Fermin cleaned one side of the garage.  (Fortunately, my side!)We put up our Christmas tree and did a little indoor decorating, but Fermin decided to bah-humbug it and skip out on putting our outdoor lights up this year.  His half-way cleaning and sprucing up our home influenced me, and I didn't get to as much as I thought I would.

But that was and still is totally okay.  It was a vacation week, after all!

We ended the week by napping pretty much all day yesterday.  We slept til 11am, went to brunch, came home and then slept until 4pm.  I know!  Lazy slugs.  But it was heaven.
the cutest lazy slugs in all the land!
Now, Fermin's back at work, and I'm about to get involved in CYBER MONDAY.  Being the little slug that I am, I much prefer online shopping to actually getting out in the crowds to do it!  AND, I'd much rather buy from people, at sites like ETSY.com, than big corporations!

It will be my first Christmas as a seller in my Etsy shop.  Please hop over to Resparkable Vintage and  take a peak at the sparkly things I'm selling over there.  Repurposed vintage jewelry (mainly), a few vintage handbags, and other vintage things I think are very special!  My goal is to put up at least an item a day throughout these shopping days of December, so check back often.  I promise you'll find something unique in my shop.  All of the jewelry I make is one of a kind, and you will never see a duplicate of anything!

The Movie to See on Thanksgiving Day: ABOUT TIME

I saw the trailer for "About Time", and thought it looked okay~ definitely good enough for a lover of nearly all rom-com movies, like me, to go see.
ABOUT TIME

I went into it thinking it would just be a sweet little love story that had something to do with time travel.  I got the impression from the trailer that it was about a guy getting to do multiple "do- overs" to get it right with the girl he likes.  That is totally not what the movie was about, and I had it categorized all wrong.

As it turns out, this was my favorite movie of the year... possibly of the past several.  Yes, it was a little about time travel, and it certainly was a love story, but mostly it was a reminder to us all to live each day of our lives with gratitude, and live it so time travel do-overs aren't necessary. Because for most of us, you only live every day of this life once.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving, treasure the people and the experiences of your day, and if you have time, take them all to see "About Time".

50 Years Later In Dallas

I have lived my whole life in Dallas, once also referred to as "The City of Hate."

I wasn't even born when JFK was shot, 50 years ago today.  But I, like most Americans of just about any age, have seen the tragic footage of that day.  I've also read lots of books about Jack and Jackie, seen movies, and after this week, watched many hours of tv specials all about the Kennedy years.

As I watch coverage about that day, November 22, 1963, I feel sad and shocked.  I can't believe this happened to this man, his family, and our country.  I can't believe it was some 24 year old crazy person with a $12 rifle that changed the world that day.  As I'm watching the lead up to that hour of that day, I know the end result, but yet, I just can't believe it will happen.  But it does and it did.

I understand how easily conspiracy theories come into play.  And some of them even sound logical.   We need it to be something much bigger than oswald that caused this terrible tragedy.  But more than likely, it wasn't.

I feel so sad for Jackie.  That trip to Dallas was her first after losing her days old baby, Patrick,  back in August.  And then, she lost her husband who she said was the love of her life.  It breaks my heart for her.

I'm sad for Dallas, that our city became infamous for that day.  The truth is, there are crazy people everywhere.  It could've happened in any city.  oswald wasn't even from Dallas, and lived here only briefly.  It wasn't Dallas' fault, and we are not, and never were, a "City of Hate".

But it's a sad day around here.  Still.  50 years later.

Our Weekend In the Texas HIll Country

We just returned from visiting our friend, Kelly. She lives in Boerne, Texas- in the Hill Country.  It's just gorgeous there, and we love visiting.  Not just me and Fermin, but Lucy and Ricky too!
the chain gang: Molly, Daisy, Lucy, Ricky and Henri la Rue
My dogs both had so much fun they have been in happy comas since our return.  They loved running around on Kelly's huge property with their friends, and getting burrs in their feet and ticks on their ears.  They had baths this afternoon and I managed to get most of that stuff out of their coats.

While they've been resting, I've been ogling the vintage costume jewelry Kelly gave me.  Seriously, I can't stop fondling it!  She found so many sparkly and beautiful things at some great estate sale and gave it all to me!
vintage jewelry to repurpose soon
On our way back to Dallas, we stopped at Enchanted Rock for a little hike, but Ricky and Lucy were just too amped up, and I felt sure they would be pulling on their leashes, and pulling me down.  It was a little late in the day anyhow, so we skipped the hike and headed home instead.  Now we have yet another reason to return to the Hill Country soon!
photo of Enchanted Rock - not the actual rock tho, just the signage.  Next time, the rock!!
We ate great meals, got caught up with our friends, met a new one, went to a soccer game, saw an amazing movie (more on that later this week!), got loads of doggy kisses, and Fermin protected Lucy from a dog attack and became my hero all over again-- All in all, an enchanting weekend!

Sparkle

Sparkle is my favorite word.  It's made it's way into a few songs I've written, and I even named my Etsy shop Resparkable Vintage, because my goal is always to give a new sparkle to vintage jewelry.

Years ago, I was in an Artist Way group, and one week, our homework assignment was to send a good old fashioned letter in the good old fashioned mail to someone else in the class.  I got a sweet letter from one lady who had cut out the dictionary definition of the word "sparkle", and told me the word reminded her of me.  It was one of the best compliments I've ever received.  I've kept that letter and that word on my bulletin board ever since!

This is a video of my song "Sparkle and Shine", posted on YouTube by some nice guy who was in the audience of a show I did a few years ago at Jefferson Freedom Cafe.

My First Craft Fair

We did it!  My friend Allyson and I sold our repurposed vintage jewelry at a craft fair this weekend!  It was our first craft fair, so we didn't quite know what to expect, so we were a little nervous going into it.  But we did it!

It was probably the perfect first craft fair for us... It was pretty small, so it never felt stressful.  My Square Reader had trouble swiping people's credit cards, so I had to type in all the information manually.  But since the crowd was small, it didn't feel hurried or rushed.  Everyone was nice and we got a lot of great feedback!

Here's how our booth looked...
The "Sparkle" Booth

repurposed jewelry, and repurposed display pieces
People seemed to like the jewelry a lot, and they had nice things to say about our booth.  In fact, some people asked about buying some of our displays!!  We joked that if the jewelry thing didn't pan out, we're pretty sure we could just start selling displays.  But I'd WAY rather get to keep repurposing jewelry! ;)

The other nice thing lots of people commented on were my price tags.  That made me so happy because I spent a lot of time making them.  But I really loved them, and felt like it was worth the effort.  I photocopied old pictures from the 40s (some of my Grandmother, Lola!), cut them out and glued them onto tag board.  I wrote a little description of each piece in its tag.  I wanted people to know what was special (vintage!) about each piece, and hoped that might add to their appreciated for the jewelry.
handmade display tags for my repurposed jewelry designs
All in all, the craft fair was a success for Resparkable Vintage.

We have another Holiday Bazaar coming up in mid-December.
We'll have lots of new stuff, because the elves will be very busy between now and then repurposing vintage jewelry into something fresh and new!  Hope to see you there...

Spread the word!  Bring your friends!  Joy to the World!

One Of My Inspirations...Jonatha Brooke

A little earlier tonight, I was in the tub with my iPad.  That's right, I take my iPad in the tub which is probably not totally recommended, but I am a rebel at heart.  Obviously.

Anyway, I intended to read some of the book I just started, The Circle, but I found myself so preoccupied with my monkey mind distractions that I just couldn't focus.  So, I hopped over to waste time on Facebook instead.  And there, I saw a link a friend had posted of Nancy Wilson, on a YouTube tutorial about how to play the beginning of "Crazy on You".

That video, of course, led me to other Heart videos.

Somehow, I eventually landed on some Jonatha Brooke videos.  And the next thing I knew, I was pruning in my tub.  But I felt inspired instead of monkey-minded. Jonatha Brooke never fails to do that for me.

Around the time I became a gigging musician, I got to see Jonatha play at the now (sadly) defunct Caravan of Dreams in Ft. Worth.  I also got to see her play an intimate little free show at the (also now defunct) Borders bookstore.  I was so inspired by her.  I loved her songs- her lyrics, and cool altered guitar tunings, I loved her interaction with her audience... I really just loved everything about her.

So when I would get nervous at one of my own gigs, I'd just pretend I was Jonatha, and I immediately felt more confident.

I love that she just keeps following life down the off the beaten path.  Her songs are usually in non-standard guitar tunings, in keys that perhaps aren't radio friendly. (Because they're not cookie cutter pop music.)  She cared for her ailing mother, who she recently lost, and has since immersed herself in writing a play about her mother, with an accompanying CD that will hopefully be out soon.  I'm sure the creative process is therapeutic for her, and I love that her fans get to share in that.  The next batch of songs may never get radio air play either.  But I love that the choices she makes don't seem to be about having a "hit".

Anyway, I just adore her.

Here's a video I ran across of her performing "Sweetest Angel"-  a song she wrote using Woody Guthrie lyrics/poetry to music she wrote.  (Check out the whole CD, Woody's words, Jonatha's music, Called "The Works"!!!) Gorgeous.

Bobcat Dazzlers Holiday Bazaar November 9

Holy Guacamole!  The holiday bazaar, my first as a vendor, was right around the corner.  Now it's closer than right around the corner~ It's  just a few houses down the road!!!  3 days away.  THIS SATURDAY.

NOVEMBER 9th!
And I cannot even believe how much thought, time, energy and worry I've put into it already.  It really bothers me that I get so bogged down by little things.  I recognize it's sort of ridiculous.  But I once heard someone say that when we get nervous about some new endeavor, or a performance, or whatever, it's because we really, really care.
And it's true.  If I didn't care, why in the world would I be expending all this energy on it!?  And I guess the more you care about something, the more you're afraid that nobody else will.

Fortunately, I'm venturing into this with a great friend, and ultimately, no matter what, this will be a good thing.  If it's a disaster, it will be something we can eventually laugh about, and hopefully learn from.  If it's a smashing success, than obviously, that will be awesome!

It's a long day for sure--- We set up our booth around 7am, to be ready for shoppers from 9apm-6pm, then we have to load everything up and drive back to Dallas.  Dinner is going to taste great that night, and my bed is going to feel absolutely dreamy.  For sure.  No matter what.

The Bobcat Dazzlers Holiday Bazaar & Craft Show is Saturday, November 9 from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Byron Nelson High School (BNHS). Over 50 vendors are participating this year (including REPARKABLE VINTAGE!) and an assortment of holiday goodies will be on sale. Take pictures with Santa and don't miss the feature performance by the Dallas Tap Dazzlers at 12:30 p.m.!

Happy Halloween!

In my neighborhood, there's usually one large mass of young, cute, dressed up trick or treaters.  And they all come at once. I'm not kidding, last year, the doorbell rang before it was even dark, before my husband had even left the office, and I opened up the door, not quite prepared for the 30 spidermans, fairy princesses, monsters, ghosts and goblins in front of me.

There's an active Moms group in my neighborhood, and my next door neighbor always hosts the pre- trick or treating party. My house is the first of the houses on their tour.   Which is great.  But also, a little overwhelming, honestly.   These are little, cute kids, and I guess they gotta get to bed early, so I sort of get it...  But really?  All of them at once?!  Can't we have them split into about 4 different groups?  Doesn't that sound more manageable for everyone?!

After that first huge group, there's usually just a little trickle of other kids, (apparently not a part of the Neighborhood's Mom's group) for about and hour.  Then, once it gets good and dark, it's usually only over-aged, non-costumed punks holding out pillow cases, not even greeting me with "Trick or Treat" that ring my doorbell. I begrudgingly throw candy to them, they don't bother a "thank you",  I then shut the door  and roll my eyes, letting Lucy and Ricky know, I don't think those kids are cool at all, and I hope they never act that ungrateful when given a treat.
Tricks + Good Manners= Treats
This year, I'm hoping the little cute mob will spread out a little better so I can actually admire the costumes, and not feel like I'm just throwing candy at kids to thin out a crowd.  I'm also planning to turn off my porch light and shut 'er down by the time the teenagers arrive.

Hopefully I can avoid getting our house tp-ed for this.  ;)
Happy Halloween.

Writing In November

Did you know November is National Novel Writing Month?

November 1st-30st, "The world needs your novel"
I guess, depending on where you live, November might sound like a great time to take on the big endeavor of churning out your next novel- It's cold and dreary, and staying inside at the keyboard, dreaming up a story might just be the best way to pass the time.

But I live in Dallas.  The days have only just begun to cool off enough that I can walk my dogs even after 9am and not have to worry about any of us suffering from heat exhaustion for the remainder of the long day.

The beginning of Fall is my favorite time of the year.  For sure.  Crisp cool days, cooler nights, falling leaves, the occasional downpour, sweaters and Uggs, and holidays in our near future.... Ah!  I LOVE IT.

However, I also love a good challenge.

But writing a novel... in a month?  I don't think so.  I'm not really sure I've got a novel in me.

But I'm pretty sure I've got a few decent short stories.  And maybe even a brief memoir.  And most definitely, more consistent blog posts!

My favorite time of the year might just be the perfect time to get myself back into a regular writing practice.  These days, writing has been on the back burner, while jewelry making has taken center stage.  But I love to write!  And I think it helps my jumbled mind to do it regularly.

So on these beautiful Fall days of November, I will be writing about an hour a day.  If it's a rainy day, or a little chilly, I'll put on a pot of tea and go nuts with the writing (probably while eating nuts)!  Or, if it's sunny and beautiful outside, I can take it to the streets-- or I can even write in my hammock if I feel it necessary!

There's a nice little website here where you can get tips, support, track your progess, and connect with other writers online if you want.  I'll be one of them.

The world needs our novels, or short stories, or whatever...

Bryan Cranston 4 Ever

Breaking Bad ruined me.

I was a little late to the party, as many viewers were.  My husband and I began watching the series off of Netflix just a few weeks before the second part of the final season began.  We had a few awesome weekends of Breaking Bad marathons, and I quickly became an addict, so to speak.

It was the best show I've ever seen.  Nothing else even comes close.  In fact, I can't really even think of many of my favorite movies that come close to matching the amazing story, as well as the top notch acting we got to see on Breaking Bad.  I can't think of a more versatile and solid actor than Bryan Cranston.

I was sad seeing it end, but at the same time, thought it was great that it ended how and when it should have, in just the perfect way for the story.  Every last detail was wrapped up, and as mixed as viewers opinions were on which charactors they loved or hated, I think Breaking Bad cleverly made just about everyone know that THAT was the right ending... The only ending it could have been.

Now, when I watch Homeland, which I used to think was just the best drama, I'm left with a feeling of,  "Is that all they've got?!"  (And, "Where the hell is Brody anyway?")

We've tried watching a few of the new dramas- "Dracula", "Betrayal"- and we've even tried to get on the "Scandal" bandwagon.

But like I said, nothing compares to Breaking Bad.
Sing us out, Sister...

Holiday Bazaar in DFW Area November 9

Altho I've since gone back and corrected it, in my last post, I originally posted the wrong date for the holiday bazaar where I will be selling my jewelry.  So just to make it clear, and in hopes that you'll mark, or re-mark, your calendar, here is the updated, and correct information:

Holiday Craft Show in DFW Area Saturday, NOVEMBER 9

In just a couple of weeks, I'll be a vendor for the first time at a holiday craft fair.  I'll be selling my repurposed jewelry that I love making, and usually sell on-line over at Etsy.com in my Resparkable Vintage shop.

I know it's hard to buy jewelry when you can't even touch it or try it on to see how it looks, so I'm happy to get the opportunity to put it in front of people.

But I'm also nervous.  Seriously nervous.

I have a friend that also makes jewelry, so we teamed up to share a booth at a couple of craft fairs this Fall.  When I filled out our applications, the show dates were far off, so it wasn't all that intimidating.  But now, as the date is approaching, I'm beginning to freak out.

I'm unsure what to expect about traffic to our booth, I've never used my SQUARE app to take credit card sales, and of course, I'm nervous about the obvious:  Will people like the jewelry enough to buy it?

But that's normal, right?  I figure, this first event is just a "get-your-feet-wet" and "learn-from-your-mistakes" mission. We aren't performing surgery or anything that's going to take or save a life, we are just selling something that we love!

Please mark your calendar for this one!
It's one day only:
November 9, from 9am-6pm
Byron Nelson High School
2775 Bobcat Blvd.
Trophy Club, TX 76262
(cross section: 114/Trophy Club Dr OR 377/Denton Hwy & Marshall Creek Rd)

If you live out that way, or have friends that do, please send them.  There are lots of different vendors selling all sorts of things, so it's a great place to find lots of unique holiday gifts.  And if you're looking for some one-of-a-kind, lovingly handmade repurposed jewelry, please come to our SPARKLE booth!

Lone (Lonely and Boring) Star State License Plate

The newest and current Texas license plate looks like this:
bleh
So, so boring.

Yesterday, the two cars I could see in front of me had such better license plates, because they weren't from Texas, where everything is bigger and more boring.

I'm jealous of the people who live in New Mexico...
ahhh- color AND a hot air balloon!  "land of enchantment"
 And the people in Arizona...
again- color!  and now a cactus.  nice!
And although I didn't see this one on the road, I did see it on the final episode of Breaking Bad, and I sure like this state's slogan on their license plate:
LIVE FREE OR DIE
C'mon, Texas!  We can do better!  This boring, no color plate just does not represent us well at all.  Let's come up with a great slogan, and maybe paint on some bluebonnets or something!

For Sentimental Reasons

The last enthusiastic thing my mom ever said to me was, "Oh! I want you to have my bike!"  She died within a week or two after that.  So of course, I was so happy to have that bike of hers! What a fun and happy gift she left me.

Fast forward several years later, and my sweet brother gave me a one speed cruiser bike I nicknamed Pinky Tuscadero.
Me and Pinky, about to head of on a Michael Jackson memorial bike ride
I loved Pinky, and Mom's bike sort of took a back seat for a while, and just sat in the garage for months.  And months.  And months.

One day, Fermin and I  ran into a friend, who told us her bike had been stolen out of her garage.  Since I had an extra bike sitting around (and Fermin was so annoyed by the space it was taking up), I told her she could use mine until she got one.  But I made it clear, I wasn't giving away the bike, I was loaning out Mom's bike.

Fast forward again, about a year later...

Pinky is at my brother's being photographed so I can sell her, and he's going to get me a Villy Custom Cruiser instead, because hello?!?!  He's Fleetwood, owner of Villy Custom Cruiser Bikes.  Of course his sister should be a riding billboard for the brand!  Until I get a new one, (and because he's giving it to me, I'm certainly not making a single demand on when I get it!) I'm without a bike at all.  And the weather is just so nice right now for bike riding.  And I keep thinking about Mom's bike.  And I miss her.  And... And... And  I WANT THE BIKE BACK!

So I texted my friend and told her just that, and could I pick it up one night this week.  She said of course. It seemed to be all good.

UNTIL, I asked Fermin what night we could pick up Mom's bike.  He gave me a look like I was the stingiest, cruelest friend ever.  He thought it was just so wrong of me to ask for it back.

I stewed about it it, worried about it, lost sleep about it.  I thought maybe I didn't say the bike was on loan, and maybe I was wrong in asking for it back. Maybe I'm just a crazy, stingy bitch. But then this morning, I texted my friend, explained that I hoped nothing was miscommunicated, and I hope she wasn't mad that I wanted the bike back.

I am so glad I expressed myself and cleared the air.  Fermin's opinion was just Fermin's opinion.  Maybe it's not what he would've done.  Although, maybe, if he had lost his Mom, he would better understand the sentimentality of that bike.

From his standpoint, it was just taking up extra space in the garage.  But from how I see it, SO WHAT?!  Even if that bike is strictly ornamental, and I never even ride it, I want it.  Always.  I don't mind lending it to a friend, because I know Mom would like that, but when I want it back, I don't want to feel guilty about it.

My friend, of course, said she totally understood, and that I had communicated how sentimental it is, and she knew it was just a loaner.

Fermin and I will never see eye to eye on this, but that is totally okay with me.  I'm getting my mom's bike back, and I can't wait to ride it!
